Namaste!
I’m Ujjwal. I’m 16 years old and studying in grade 10. My favorite subject is Science because becoming a doctor is my dream. There is only one person from my community who has become a doctor; I want to be the second. Our village has no access to health care so the villagers have to come to the city for check-ups and treatment.”
“I am the first one in my entire family who has the chance to study this far. All the villagers acknowledge that I have received a rare opportunity. Even my extended family encourage me to study well so that I can earn the villagers’ respect for my parents.
In my community, we can’t afford even 2 meals a day; so providing the children education is a stretch for the family’s finances. Because of this, many children do not go to school – kids roam around with friends, drink alcohol, and even steal. If our community’s economic condition was better, all the villagers would be willing to send their kids to school. But the sad reality is our community can’t take care of even their needs for survival.

Just 2 years ago I was a volunteer at a blanket distribution event at my village. The villagers were so appreciative that they broke out in tears as they received the blankets – just imagine how fragile the status of our community is. We can’t take care of our needs for survival; it is a whole different story to support children for their education.”
Ujjwal sees his future bright…
“I am very fortunate to have received the opportunity of continuing my studies while being nurtured at the hostel. It’s not always easy to be away from family. But this sacrifice can help me have a better chance of excelling. After joining the current school, I have been able to improve my studies and be more fluent in English which is a skill that will help me get better opportunities.”
Ujjwal is the definition of fun for the people around him. It is a treat to the ears when he sings and plays his guitar. Currently, his favorite song is “Sana Sana Kura”. Furthermore, he enjoys sharing meals with his hostel mates whom he refers to as his brothers and sisters.
